If you're reading this article, there's a good chance you're skeptical. Maybe you've never had a psychic reading before. Perhaps you've had one that didn't make sense. Or maybe you're simply wondering how anyone could tell the difference between a genuine psychic and someone who is simply very good at reading people.

Those are fair questions. In fact, they're the same questions I believe everyone should ask before scheduling a reading. You do not owe anyone your belief simply because they call themselves psychic. At the same time, you don't have to dismiss every experience without giving it a fair evaluation. The most reasonable approach lies somewhere in the middle: remain open enough to examine the evidence while keeping your critical thinking firmly intact.

As both an attorney and a psychic medium, I have spent much of my life evaluating evidence. While a courtroom and a psychic reading are obviously very different environments, they share one important principle: conclusions should be based on evidence, not assumptions. So let's begin with a better question. Rather than asking, "Are psychics real?" Ask yourself: "What would it actually take for me to seriously consider that something unusual happened during a reading?" That question changes everything.

Start With Curiosity, Not Belief

There is an important difference between being skeptical and being closed-minded. Healthy skepticism asks questions. It weighs information. It looks for explanations before reaching conclusions. Being closed-minded rejects every possibility before the evidence is even considered.

Likewise, being open-minded does not mean believing everything you hear. It simply means you're willing to evaluate the experience honestly. That is exactly how I encourage people to approach a reading.

Evidence Comes Before Interpretation

One of the biggest mistakes people make is focusing on dramatic predictions instead of evidence. The strongest readings rarely begin with extraordinary claims. They begin with recognizable facts. Before anyone starts interpreting what the information might mean, there should first be enough accurate information to establish confidence that the connection itself is genuine.

Think of it like building a house. You don't start with the roof. You begin with the foundation. In an evidential reading, the foundation is made of specific pieces of information that the sitter—the person receiving the reading—can recognize without having supplied them first. Once that foundation exists, interpretation becomes much more meaningful.

Imagine a reader saying: "You've experienced disappointment." That could describe almost anyone. Now imagine the reader says: "I keep seeing an older man who worked with his hands. He shows me a worn leather tool belt, talks about fixing everything himself, and keeps pointing toward a detached garage." Specific information allows you to answer with simple responses such as yes, no, I’m not sure, or I don’t know. This is one reason I encourage people to avoid lengthy explanations at the beginning of a reading. The more information the sitter provides, the harder it becomes to distinguish what originated with the reader from what came from the client. A genuine reading should not depend on the client telling the story first.

One Accurate Statement Doesn't Prove Anything

Everyone guesses correctly from time to time. One impressive statement could simply be coincidence. What deserves your attention is a consistent pattern. Do multiple pieces of information connect naturally? Do they point toward the same person, situation, or life event? Do they build upon one another? Just as a detective rarely solves a case from a single clue, a meaningful reading is usually built from many smaller pieces of evidence that form a coherent picture.

A Genuine Psychic Doesn't Need You to Believe

One question I hear often is: "Why did two readers tell me different things?" There are several possible reasons. First, every reader receives information differently. Whether someone accepts this spiritual framework is a personal decision. What is important to understand is that many experienced readers believe these relationships influence how information is received and interpreted. That is one reason two sincere and ethical readers may experience the same client differently.

Energy Plays a Bigger Role Than Many People Realize

In my experience, one of the most important factors in a successful reading is the energetic connection between the reader and the sitter. Energy is a word that means different things to different people, so let me explain what I mean. Have you ever met someone with whom conversation flowed effortlessly? And then met someone else where, despite everyone's best intentions, communication simply felt awkward? The difference wasn't that either person was good or bad. The connection simply felt different. Psychic readings can work much the same way.

When the energetic connection between the reader and the sitter is strong, information often flows more naturally. Details may become clearer, and the reading can feel more connected. That doesn't guarantee perfection, and it doesn't mean another reader is less gifted. It simply helps explain why one person may have an extraordinary experience with one psychic and a less meaningful experience with another.

Watch for Warning Signs

While there are many sincere readers, there are also people who misuse the trust others place in them.

Be cautious if a reader:

• Claims to be 100 percent accurate.

• Uses fear to convince you that something terrible will happen.

• Tells you that you're cursed or under a dark influence that only they can remove.

• Pressures you into paying for additional sessions to avoid disaster.

• Refuses to accept that something may not connect.

• Makes only vague statements that could apply to almost anyone.

Ethical readers should leave you feeling informed and empowered—not frightened or dependent.

What Should You Take Away From a Good Reading?

A genuine reading is not measured by whether every single detail is perfect. It is measured by whether the information forms a meaningful body of evidence that helps you better understand your life, your circumstances, or the choices before you. It should provide clarity and encourage thoughtful reflection. Most importantly, it should respect your ability to think for yourself.

You do not have to abandon critical thinking to explore a psychic reading. In fact, I believe critical thinking makes the experience better. Evaluate the evidence and pay close attention to whether the reader provides specific, connected, and meaningful information before you explain your situation. Notice whether the reading feels collaborative rather than controlling. Ask yourself whether the information stands on its own.

Whether you ultimately believe in psychic abilities is a personal decision that no one else can make for you. My hope is simply that you approach the experience fairly. Don't believe everything without question, but also don't dismiss everything without examination, either. Healthy skepticism and genuine curiosity are not opposites. Together, they provide one of the most thoughtful ways to evaluate any extraordinary claim—and they may just lead you to discover something you never expected.
